Gus Bradley is coming over from the Las Vegas Raiders where he spent 1 season as the teams Defensive Coordinator. Bradley brings 15 seasons of NFL coaching experience to the table as he was the architect for the vaunted Seattle Seahawks defense, 2013-16 as the Head Coach in Jacksonville with a 14-48 record. From 2017-2020 Bradley held the defensive coordinator position for the LA Chargers.
Gus Bradley definitely brings an aggressive defensive mindset to Indy. One that I’ve always felt should be leading Frank Reich’s defense.
In many seasons, he has seen much success with any defense he’s led. In 2020 with the Chargers. Bradley’s unit ranked Top-10 in Total defense with allowing 342 yards per game.he ranked 9th gassing the pass 223. Bradley was instrumental in the development in Joey Bosa, Derwin James, Kenneth Murray, and unleashing Melvin Ingram.
In 2021 with the Las Vegas Raiders while not having as much of a talented squad outside of Maxx Crosby, Yannick Ngakoue and rookie Safety Trevon Moerhig. The defense ranked 14th in total defense, 13th against the pass, and 19th against the run.
Gus Bradley is set up for success day 1 in Indy. With established players like DeForest Buckner, Darious Leonard, Bobby Okereke, Khari Willis, Kenny Moore helps you out and your game plan a lot. Especially with developing talent in Kwity Paye, Dayo, Julian Blackmon, Rock Ya-Sin.
A new Era of Defense is upon us in Indianapolis. No more of this weak minded passive/prevent approach. Bradley is going to want to get up in your face, mix in sparring (lowest % in the NFL this past year), but creative blitzes and press up at the line of scrimmage.
Now which assistants would he want to bring with him to Indy? Raiders DB coach Ron Milus, Saints CB coach Kris Richard, Saints DL coach Ryan Nielsen, and Raiders DL coach Rod Marinelli are just a few names to keep an eye on. Bradley isn’t walking into a rebuild on defense situation. He already has talent. His biggest task will be the development of our outside rushers Paye, Dayo, and potentially Turay, and Banogu.
Get ready Colts fans, Gus Bradley will bring a whole new attitude to the defense and I believe we will see it translate to a winning defense.
