Let’s react to the pregame predictions as the Colts got a much-needed win over the New York Jets 28-27.

The Anthony Richardson Offense Has Returned

What a return it was for Anthony Richardson. After the rough start to the season and eventual benching, he has silenced the doubters at least in the short term. He had his best outing of the season if not his career. We saw improvement in multiple facets of his game including accuracy, game management, and confidence.

His accuracy was much improved at 66 percent, up from his 50 percent career completion rate. On the game management front, you could see his decision-making improve. He made better throws and the communication with these receivers was better. And his confidence, well, you could see that the two weeks not only woke him up, but he seemed refreshed and renewed.

No Turnovers, But Pass Rush Duo Shines

While the defense held together, they did not force any turnovers. The Jets did a terrific job of not turning the ball over. Even with the Cover-2 looks and blanket coverage, they were able to not turn the ball over. They were able to Rodgers for three sacks this week and kept the pressure on him most of the game.

The defense was terrific on third down where the Jets only converted 4/13. They only allowed the Jets offense to obtain 10 first downs as well. The pass rush shined as rookie Laiatu Latu and Kwity Paye shined. Latu had, arguably, the best game of his career thus far with 3 QB hits, 2 tackles for loss, and one solo sack. This duo will need to continue to keep up the pressure as we finish out the season.

Most Complete Game So Far This Season

We finally saw this team put together the most complete game in all three phases. We saw the growth of Anthony Richardson on offense, but I think we are beginning to see this wide receiver room grow into its own as a like-minded unit. Josh Downs, not Micheal Pittman Jr, is turning into WR1 for this team. They drafted him for this route running and ability to get open and he is improving, no matter who has been under center.

On defense, as I always say, they bent but never broke yet again. They applied the pressure and the repeated blanket coverage we have been looking for all season. As mentioned, the duo of Latu and Paye were fantastic in the trenches. Also thought Jaylon Jones had a terrific game bottling up Garrett Wilson.

It’s an often overlooked aspect of the game but the special teams unit might have been the second-best storyline behind the Anthony Richardson breakout. All aspects were impactful and instrumental to the victory over New York. Sanchez had 4 punts on a 50-yard average and kicker Matt Gay is improving. He contributed 10 total points by going 3/3 on field goals and had an extra point. In the return game, both Goodson and Dulin contributed to the field position game with strong return performances.

Strong performances all around will be needed this coming week as the Colts return home to take on the perennial NFC Super Bowl favorites, Detroit Lions. No longer a must-win as it’s against an NFC opponent but would go a long way as the Colts continue to fight for a playoff spot.
